Hermann Sörgel did not live to witness the changing direction of energy policy in the postwar period. He is said to have died in a car accident on Christmas Day 1952. Without its creator, the movement steadily lost momentum. The Atlantropa Institute, established to promote and develop the proposal, only lasted a few more years before closing in 1960.
