Federal immigration officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement shot a man Tuesday morning during a law enforcement action in Stanislaus County, California, authorities said.
The shooting occurred while the vehicle was parked along Interstate 5 near Sperry Street in Patterson.The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the incident involved ICE agents and that no local law enforcement officers were directly involved in the shooting. The “suspect” was transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment following the incident.Immigration and Customs Enforcement identified the person who shot him as Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez. According to a statement from the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Hernandez is wanted in El Salvador for questioning in connection with a murder.During the attempted arrest, the man allegedly used his car to try to run over an officer, ICE officials said. In response, the agents opened fire. The agency described the shooting as defensive.The shooting closed several on- and off-ramps on Interstate 5 and Sperry Street for much of the day. Drivers were warned of significant traffic delays and asked to avoid the area.The FBI is involved in the investigation, working alongside federal and local authorities.
