Mexican music stars and celebrity couple Beso Pluma and Kenya Os are under fire on social media following the murder of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes, the powerful boss of the Jalisco New Generation cartel. El Mencho, one of the world’s most wanted smugglers, died after a Mexican military operation on Sunday, February 22, CNN reports. According to the US Drug Enforcement Agency, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel has become one of the “most powerful and brutal criminal organizations” within Mexico.

Narcocorido is a subgenre of regional Mexican music, a type of ballad that tells stories of drug trafficking, violence, and the lives of drug cartel members. Many popular stars have faced criticism for their song lyrics, which often depict cartel leaders as Robin Hood-like figures.

In 2022, Bluma was criticized for performing in front of a large portrait of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the former leader of the Sinaloa cartel, in Culiacan. He sang Siempre Pendientes, a song that refers to a drug dealer. But he later claimed that his team was not responsible, but that the show was the responsibility of the festival organizers, according to El Pais newspaper.
