US President Donald Trump will personally launch the Great American State Fair next month after several musical acts pulled out of the event, over concerns about its political connections.The organizers of the Freedom 250 Exhibition announced on Saturday that Trump will begin celebrations on June 24 in Washington, D.C., as part of the activities commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
“We are pleased to announce that President Trump will personally begin this historic celebration on Wednesday, June 24,” Freedom 250 said in a statement.This announcement came after a number of artists, including Bret Michaels, Martina McBride and the Commodores, withdrew from the event.
Some artists said they believed the celebrations would be nonpartisan, and later became uncomfortable with its political overtones.In response to the withdrawals, Trump mocked the departing artists in posts on his Truth Social platform and suggested he could replace them himself.“I understand that artists feel embarrassed about their performances,” Trump wrote.He later added that he was considering bringing in “the man some say is the greatest president in history (the GOAT!) Trump, to replace these highly paid third-rate “artists.”In a separate post, Trump suggested canceling musical performances altogether.Trump said: “We should have a huge Make America Great Again rally, with 250 people, instead of having expensive singers that no one wants to hear, whose music is boring, and yet they do nothing but complain.”Trump last year launched Freedom 250, which describes itself as a nonpartisan organization and is led by a former State Department employee from his first administration.Martina McBride said on Instagram that she “had an opportunity to perform at a non-partisan event but that turned out to be misleading.”Despite the withdrawals, several artists remained on the program, including Flo Rida, Milli Vanilli’s Fab Morvan, and Vanilla Ice.The Great American State Fair is scheduled to take place on Washington’s National Mall from June 25 to July 10 and will include exhibits, musical performances, family attractions and military flyovers as part of the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
