London stabbing declared ‘terrorist incident’; UK announces £25m security boost for Jewish community

Classification of the stabbing incident in London as a “terrorist incident”

London’s Metropolitan Police have arrested a 45-year-old man in connection with a stabbing attack that injured two Jewish men in the north London suburb of Golders Green, in what authorities have now classified as a “terrorist incident”.The suspect, a British national born in Somalia, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after being released from hospital and remains in police custody. The police said that the two victims, aged 76 and 34, suffered stab wounds but were in stable condition after receiving treatment at the scene and being taken to the hospital. The area, which has a large Jewish population, has witnessed a series of anti-Semitic incidents in recent weeks.

An anti-terrorism investigation is ongoing

Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Lawrence Taylor said counter-terrorism officers were investigating whether the attack deliberately targeted the Jewish community.Commissioner Mark Rowley described what happened as “an attack on British Jews,” noting that the suspect had a history of serious violence and mental health problems.Police released footage showing officers confronting the suspect, using a stun gun, and disarming him after he refused to show his hands, raising fears that he may be carrying an explosive device.

Leaders condemn ‘anti-Semitic attack’

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident, describing it as “absolutely horrific” and anti-Semitic, noting that “attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Britain.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan also condemned the violence and promised to strengthen the role of the police in the region.Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis called for “targeted action,” warning that words alone are no longer enough as fear grows within society.

Rise in anti-Semitic incidents raises concern

Authorities and community leaders have noted a sharp rise in anti-Semitic incidents across the UK since war broke out between Israel and Hamas in late 2023.According to the Community Security Fund, nearly 3,700 incidents were recorded last year, more than double the previous year’s numbers.Officials also warned that some individuals may be influenced by or support hostile foreign actors, raising broader national security concerns.Jonathan Hall, an independent terrorism monitor, described the situation as “the largest national security emergency” since the wave of attacks in 2017.

The government announces a funding increase of £25 million

In response, the UK government announced £25 million in additional funding to boost security for Jewish communities, The Independent reported. The package will support strengthening police patrols and protective measures at synagogues, schools and community centres.Security Minister Dan Jarvis said legislation would also be accelerated to target individuals acting as agents of state-sponsored groups under the National Security Act.

The recent series of attacks raises tensions

The stabbing follows several incidents in Golders Green, including an arson attack on ambulances linked to a volunteer Jewish emergency service and another arson attack on a memorial wall. These incidents led to increased anxiety among residents of the area, where nearly half of the 15,000 residents are Jews.Community groups reported that the suspect was seen trying to stab passers-by before he was arrested.
