Cursing at Iran won't reopen Strait of Hormuz: Ro Khanna says Obama-like statesmanship needed now

Ro Khanna says cursing Iran will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna expressed shock at President Donald Trump’s Social Truth post filled with insulting words toward Iran, and said the president is letting down American forces in Iran. On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Khanna said he would not vote for any additional funding for the war.

In a post on Truth Social earlier in the day, Trump verbally warned Iran that if it did not reach a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz before Tuesday, the country would “live in hell.” The choice of words sparked criticism. “Well, I’m relieved and what an extraordinary achievement for our troops. I mean, they really deserve praise. But you know what it is, Christine – it’s that the President really let them down.

To have a tweet this morning cursing and threatening to commit war crimes, to say we have destroyed Iran’s ballistic missile capability, and yet there are forces flying overhead being shot at. We need to end this war now.

We need an immediate ceasefire. Khanna said that Iran, Israel and the United States need to stop the bombing and reach a negotiated settlement.

An American pilot missing in Iran was rescued after his fighter jet was shot down on Friday.

Khanna praised the rescue operation, while condemning the president’s continued threats.Khanna said that the United States now needs statesmanship like Barack Obama.“Let me tell you what will not open the Strait of Hormuz: threatening to commit war crimes or bombing power plants indiscriminately, and cursing Iran. What we need is statesmanship like President Obama did. What we need to do is stop the bombing, reach a ceasefire, and then work with Oman, work with China, work with Gulf allies and European allies to come to a solution that allows the Strait of Hormuz to be opened.”

“But that will not happen through a major escalation,” Khanna said.

“No, I don’t support the new funding. I mean they’re asking for $400 billion. And the answer for every Democrat should be ‘absolutely not, absolutely not’. We don’t need to read it. We don’t need to study it. Is it $400 billion for the war that we oppose? We could have universal child care for that. We could have free public college for that. We could pay teachers $60,000 for that. I call it the new economic patriotism,” Khanna said. “They oppose this funding and say, ‘We actually support the American people.'”
