'Cruel and toxic': US citizen shares harrowing experience with international school in Bengaluru, warns parents before returning to India

A parent shared the stress their children experienced when they switched from an American school to an international school in Bengaluru, India.

One parent, a US citizen who lived in India for four years, shared the harrowing experience they had with their children at an expensive international school in Bengaluru. As many Indian parents with school-going children often think about returning to India and enrolling their children in international schools, the Redditor warned them of the huge cultural difference and suggested they first talk to parents whose children go to school. The Redditor said that they are now back in the US, and that the kids, who never shared anything when they were in India, spoke about the enormous pressure they faced. Even international schools in India focus a lot on memorizing things rather than understanding concepts. There was bullying by children belonging to influential families, and this particular school turned a blind eye to the complaints. The Redditor also said that there’s a big push for Christianity. The Redditor wrote: “One thing that was readily apparent was the enormous pressure. The curriculum, even for a school that claimed to do IB/IGCSE, was based much more on information to be memorized than on projects or real understanding, especially in science. Constantly being on top of every little thing being taught was essential for parents, especially for those whose children were not naturally well organised.”“This school had a great list of accepted US and UK universities, which is what attracted us to it.

Honestly, it worked out for my daughter, she got accepted into a very good university as well as a great scholarship.”The post added: “But the general atmosphere at the school was harsh, toxic, and disrespectful to the students, to say the least.”“My youngest son experienced bullying that was overlooked by teachers because the students who were the bullies came from influential families with connections.”“There was a general attitude of disrespect or what we know.

For example, the school’s trustees were non-Christian, but its principals were Christian. There were regular Bible readings in this school, which was very disrespectful, as parents sent their children to this school, thinking it was secular. “In fact, my children said that Christianity was brought to them much more in India than they had witnessed in the United States,” the post added.

“Robots were taught through rote learning.”

The Redditor also revealed the lack of classroom experiments. The person added: “At my local school in the USA, kids go on an ocean stay in 6th grade and do dissection; there was nothing like that at this Indian school. There were no experiments in physics or chemistry either. Robotics was rote learning, which is definitely far from the way it’s taught in the USA. Kids definitely don’t need to memorize robot code to take a written test in middle school.”
