Opposition parties including Congress and Trinamool Congress on Friday (Feb 13, 2026) congratulated him. BNP for winning the parliamentary elections of Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by its President Tariq Rahman has secured an absolute majority in the parliamentary elections to be held on February 12, the latest official update released by the Election Commission of Bangladesh has revealed. According to the latest report, the BNP-led alliance has secured 212 seats with a two-thirds majority in Parliament, while the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami has won 77 seats.

Elections were held in August 2024 to elect a new government to replace the interim administration that had taken over after the fall of the Awami League regime.

In a post on X, Congress chief Mallikarjuna Kharge said: “On behalf of the Indian National Congress I congratulate Mr. Tariq Rahman and BNP for winning the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh.” The party chief said India and Bangladesh share deep-rooted bonds of history, language, culture and other commonalities.

“A democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh will always be supported by all Indians for stability and peace in our region,” Mr. Kharge said.

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool President Mamata Banerjee congratulated Mr. Rahman for leading the party to victory in the parliamentary elections.

In a post on X, he said, “Shubhanandan, my heartiest congratulations to all my brothers and sisters in Bangladesh, to all the people. My advance Ramzan Mubarak to all of them. My congratulations to my Tariq-bhai, his party and all parties for this great win. Prayer, may you all be well and be happy.”

Ms. Banerjee expressed hope that relations between India and Bangladesh would remain cordial. “I want our relations with Bangladesh to always be cordial,” he said.

In the absence of ousted premier Sheikh Hasina’s now-defunct Awami League, the election was seen as a direct contest between the BNP and its erstwhile ally Jamaat-e-Islami. BNP last had two of its leaders serving as ministers between 2001 and 2006 when Jamaat was its crucial partner.
