A couple climbs to the top of the famous Empire State Building in New York City
Two people were arrested after they climbed to the top of the Empire State Building in New York City without safety equipment, unfurled a sign and appeared to get engaged during the stunt on Wednesday afternoon. The New York Police Department identified the couple as Ivan Kuznetsov, 32, and Angelina Nicolaou, 33. Kuznetsov’s social media accounts identify him as Ivan Berkus. The two, who live in East Orange, New Jersey, are known for climbing skyscrapers and other tall buildings without ropes or protective equipment.
According to law enforcement sources cited by CBS News, the couple has been charged with burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief, violating a local law, possession of burglar’s tools, criminal tampering, criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct. The incident occurred around noon, when the man and woman, both wearing masks, climbed the tower at the top of the Empire State Building. They appeared to have no visible safety equipment and were seen clinging to the structure while holding up a large black banner with white letters. The banner reads: “When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world knows peace.”This quote is often attributed to American guitarist Jimi Hendrix.
Investigators believe the pair accessed the tower through a hatch on the 103rd floor of the building that is typically used for water tower maintenance, according to preliminary information law enforcement sources shared with CBS News.Authorities also said the couple appeared to have been engaged while climbing before they were taken into custody.
