Gather together, leaders, it’s International Women’s Day, and we’re celebrating it all, girls. The occasion takes many forms on March 8 every year, and is embraced by celebrities and ordinary people alike. Some people celebrate International Women’s Day by recognizing the strong women who have impacted their lives. Others use their platform to raise awareness about women’s issues around the world.
While the feminist movement may seem recent, International Women’s Day has deep roots. People celebrated the holiday for the first time in 1911, and the United Nations recognized it in 1977, according to the United Nations website. Since then, the mission has been working to advance the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women around the world.

The former First Lady marked International Women’s Day with a message against child marriage. On her Instagram page, she described the practice as “one of the biggest threats to girls’ education and empowerment around the world,” as more than 12 million girls under the age of 18 are married every year.
