The trial of Carmelo Anthony (left) for the murder of Austin Metcalf has begun in Texas.
The highly anticipated trial of Carmelo Anthony, who stabbed Texas teen Austin Metcalf last year, has begun with shocking revelations. “I was stabbed,” Metcalf said as he limped toward his twin brother, Hunter Metcalf, then bled to death in his arms.
Video of the stabbing was shown to jurors and shows Anthony trying to get rid of the knife and run away but did not get off the field as coaches stopped him. When a police officer arrested Anthony and described him as an “alleged suspect”, he said: “I’m not an alleged suspect, I did it.”Anthony is out on bail but under house arrest. Anthony posted $250,000 bail for his release and has since remained under house arrest. He was allowed to graduate from high school with a GPA of 3.7,An 18-person jury, including six alternates and no Black members, will decide Anthony’s fate.
After hearing the opening arguments of the trial, the video was shown Thursday.Anthony’s attorney, Mike Howard, said his client acted in self-defense, in response to “fear and chaos.” “After Carmelo defended himself with that knife, he ran away. He didn’t stab again. He dropped the knife. He didn’t stab anyone else,” Howard said. The altercation between Anthony and Austin began over a seat at a track meet but gained national significance because Carmelo Anthony is black.
“This case has nothing to do with race,” Texas Attorney General Bill Wirsky said during the hearing. “This case is not self-defense. Provocative, unjustified killing – that’s why we’re here this morning.”
A frantic 911 call by the coach
Jurors in Carmelo Anthony’s trial heard a frantic 911 call from a Frisco ISD track coach after the stabbing of Austin Metcalf. On the call, the background noise of the track meet could be heard as Liberty High School coach Joshua Redman urged Austin to buckle down to fight the injury. On the call was coach Robert Thayer. “He’s breathing,” Thayer told the 911 operator.
