Bangladesh HC rejects bail application of detained Hindu monk

Dhaka: The Bangladesh Supreme Court on Sunday rejected the bail application of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das during his trial before a trial court in connection with the 2024 murder of a lawyer during clashes in Chittagong after he was denied bail in a sedition case.Das’s lawyer, Apurba Kumar Bhattacharya, told reporters that Justices KM Zahid Sarwar and Sheikh Abu Tahir had scheduled Monday to hear bail petitions in four more cases against the monk. “HC has rejected our bail application as witness testimony is being recorded in the (lower) court in Chittagong,” Bhattacharya said.Prosecutors earlier said 39 people were charged with the murder of prosecutor Saif al-Islam Aliyev, while 23 people, including Das, were detained to stand trial in person with the remaining 16 absconding. Das’s lawyer requested bail, saying that the monk had been suffering from illnesses in prison for a long time.On April 30 last year, HC granted him bail in the sedition case – allegedly insulting the national flag of Bangladesh – but the higher appellate division of the Supreme Court subsequently stayed the bail order.
