US President Donald Trump on Wednesday appeared to refer to the newly trending name Zahran Mamdani in his speech. However, Mamdani, who is the mayor of New York City and stands in stark ideological and political disagreement with Trump, was recognized by the US president.From the podium during his State of the Union address, Trump pointed to Mamdani and said: “Bad policy, but he’s a nice guy.”

Trump described Zahran Mamdani as a “communist,” but also described him as a “nice guy,” adding that he talks to him “a lot.”“…Even the new communist mayor of New York City,” Trump said in his 2026 State of the Union address. “I think he’s a nice guy.
