A truck carrying passengers crashed in northern Nigeria due to reckless driving, killing at least 30 people and injuring several others, officials said on Sunday (February 8, 2026).

A statement from the Kano Governor’s office said the trailer was driving on the highway in Kwaner Barde town in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano when it lost control.

Road accidents are frequent in Africa’s most populous country, partly due to poor road conditions and lax enforcement of traffic laws.

The truck involved in the latest accident was transporting some passengers and goods towards Gujungu town in Kano when it crashed early Sunday morning (February 8, 2026).

The injured, many of them with serious injuries, are receiving medical attention at various hospitals, Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s spokesman, Sunusi Batur Dawakin Tofa, said in a statement.

“The governor described the incident as heartbreaking and a great loss not only to the affected families but to the people of Kano State as a whole,” the statement added.
