In what could be described as a humanity-first approach, the Danish military has reportedly evacuated a crew member on a US submarine off the coast of Greenland for urgent medical treatment despite tense relations between the two sides over territorial control of Greenland.

The incident occurred on Saturday when the Danish military evacuated the American crew member who was in need of urgent medical care about 7 nautical miles off Nuuk, according to the Associated Press.

The American crew member was reportedly evacuated by a Danish Seahawk helicopter deployed on an inspection vessel and then taken to a hospital in the city.

Trump later said a plan to send a hospital ship to the autonomous Danish region of Greenland was underway, where he said people who fall ill there are unable to get proper medical care.

“Working with the wonderful Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we will be sending a great hospital boat to Greenland to care for the many sick people who are not being cared for there. It is on the way!!!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, referring to his special envoy to Greenland.

However, his remarks did not go down well with Greenland as Prime Minister Jens Fredrik Nielsen said “no thanks” to Trump for his proposal to send a hospital ship to Greenland as he said he is working with Louisiana Governor and Greenland’s special envoy, Jeff Landry, to send a hospital boat to Greenland.

“President Trump’s idea of sending a US hospital ship here to Greenland has been mentioned. But we have a public health care system where treatment is free for citizens. It is a deliberate choice,” Nielsen said in a Facebook post.

Greenland remains open to dialogue and cooperation with the United States as well, Nielsen said. “But talk to us instead of just making somewhat random outbursts on social media,” he said.
