America's 250th Birthday from Space: NASA shares stunning footage from the International Space Station of fireworks in Los Angeles

From hundreds of kilometers above the ground, the national celebration looked very different. As crowds gathered across the United States to celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary, astronauts aboard the International Space Station watched the evening lights spread across the planet below.

On July 4, as fireworks filled the Los Angeles sky, the display became part of a much larger spectacle that included city lights, coastlines and the dark curve of the Earth. The station’s cameras captured the moment as they passed over the area, providing a rare perspective of one of the largest celebrations in the country’s history. For those living in orbit, the anniversary unfolded not only on Earth but also from space.

A rare view of the International Space Station for America’s 250th birthday celebrations from orbit

The International Space Station was flying over the Los Angeles area on the night of July 4 when fireworks began to appear across the city. From orbit, the individual displays blended into a pattern of bright flashes spread across the metropolitan area.NASA later shared footage from the station showing the view from above. The short clip captured several fireworks displays taking place at the same time, with bursts of light appearing across the landscape below.

The spectacle was not one event, but thousands of celebrations taking place across a vast urban area. From the station’s perspective, the fireworks appeared as quick pulses of light against the surrounding darkness, resembling flashes moving across a distant cityscape.

Meet the Expedition 74 crew observing Earth from orbit

At the time of the anniversary celebrations, seven astronauts were living aboard the International Space Station as part of Expedition 74.

The crew included three NASA astronauts: Jack Hathaway, Jessica Meir, and Chris Williams. The three were working as flight engineers during the mission. The rest of the crew represents international partners. Sophie Adino was part of ESA’s contribution, while Andrey Fedyaev, Sergei Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev represented the Russian space programme. Kud-Sverchkov served as mission commander, while Adinut, Fedyev, and Mikaev served as flight engineers alongside NASA crew members. For astronauts aboard the station, events on Earth often appear as patterns of light rather than as individual moments. Cities become glowing webs, storms stretch across continents, and grand celebrations can sometimes be recognized from orbit.

NASA carried the anniversary theme beyond Earth

The 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States was not only celebrated by events on the ground. NASA included this achievement in many of its space activities. The agency placed large “America 250” markings on the Space Launch System rocket used in the Artemis 2 mission, which carried astronauts around the moon during its test flight. The four crew members also wore special patches created to commemorate the anniversary. The mission represents another link between the country’s history and its plans in space. While Fourth of July celebrations recalled the 250th anniversary of independence, Artemis 2 focused on preparing for future human exploration beyond Earth’s orbit.

A celebration seen from two worlds

Fireworks are usually launched from streets, rooftops, and viewing areas crowded with spectators. The International Space Station provided a completely different perspective; Where the boundaries between individual celebrations disappeared. From space, Los Angeles appeared as part of a larger illuminated landscape. The fireworks were brief moments of brightness, only visible for seconds as the station continued along its orbital path at thousands of kilometers per hour. The footage served as a reminder that major events on Earth can sometimes be seen from far beyond the atmosphere. For the astronauts aboard the station, America’s 250th birthday was not just a celebration happening below them, but also a view of a changing planet from above.
