'Let there be a great deal of anger': Zahran Mamdani reacts to criticism after hosting first iftar at New York City Hall

New York City Mayor Zahran Mamdani responded to the barrage of hate he received after hosting his first iftar at New York City Hall. Mamdani has been described as the enemy within, and in response, New York City’s first Muslim mayor said there should be similar outrage from politicians in Washington when children go hungry.

“Let there be as much outrage on the part of Washington politicians when children go hungry as there is when I break bread with New Yorkers,” Mamdani wrote in response to Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s op-ed.Mamdani’s hosting of iftar, where he invited community members and was seen breaking his fast while sitting on the floor, turned into a meme as trolls compared the photo to 9/11. New York State Senator Chuck Schumer came to Mamdani’s defense and spoke about Tuberville’s Islamophobia.

“This is mindless hate,” Schumer wrote. “American Muslims are cops, doctors, nurses, teachers, bankers, builders, mothers, fathers, neighbors, mayors, and more. Islamophobic hatred like this is fundamentally un-American, and we must confront and defeat it whenever it rears its ugly head.”

MAGA activist Laura Loomer also claimed that one of the guests at Mamdani’s iftar party made the ISIS finger salute. “The Muslim who was invited to the New York City Mayor’s Residence by @ZohranKMamdani for Ramadan Iftar yesterday gave a one-finger ISIS salute inside Gracie Mansion.

This comes after two ISIS terrorists threw a bomb at Americans in New York City this weekend. Before this breakfast, Al-Mamdani was criticized for hosting Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil and his family for dinner, on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of Khalil’s arrest. “A year ago, Mahmoud was walking home through our city after breakfast with his wife, Nour, when he was arrested by federal agents, flown to Louisiana, and then detained in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility for several months. At that time, he was forced to not give birth to his first child.

“All of this in order to exercise his First Amendment rights to protest the ongoing genocide in Palestine.” “Mahmoud is a New Yorker, he belongs to New York City.”
