In DTF St Louis, a diverse crime drama, Joy Sunday and Richard Jenkins enter a detective world that blends humour, emotion and contemplation.Speaking to ETimes about what attracted her to the project after working on the hit teen drama ‘Wednesday’, Sunday said: ‘I think for me, this DTF was an ending of silence and stillness, which is something I haven’t been able to work with a lot before, and it was really a gift to be able to sit with the ideas, especially as we see in the episodes, and play them out, and have the audience sit with them, my character throughout everything she’s discovering.
“I think that was a real gift.”Meanwhile, Jenkins credited the power of writing in shaping his experience on the show. He said: “It’s the writing that dictates what you do and who you are, and the writing, and that’s a very good thing. That…I think I was kind of surprised every day. About what happened and how the scene played out. Things that you couldn’t consciously understand, but play out, to do. It always ended up in a place where I was surprised.”
When asked about the show’s depiction of modern middle-aged relationships and what defines its success, Jenkins gave a candid response. “Ratings!” “I’ll call it a success if you can’t wait to see the next episode,” he said before adding, “Because I don’t, that is… I think everyone will take something different from this. When I watch something, I put myself in this world, which of these characters do I relate to? And I think everyone will take something different from this.”
“However, Sunday highlighted just how successful the HBO series brought to mind showrunner Steve Conrad. “I think I would consider it a success for everyone to understand the beauty of his body of work, and to go and explore and go back to his archives and see his other works,” she said, “because I think all of his works are very empathetic, thoughtful, thoughtful, exploring who we are, who we can be as human beings, and so I find it a success that people come back and want to see more.”
“The series streaming on JioHotstar, which stars Jason Bateman, David Harbour, Linda Cardellini, Richard Jenkins, Joey Sunday, Arlan Ruff and Peter Sarsgaard, is coming to an end with the series finale scheduled for April 12.
