A message sent in seconds can lead to consequences that last much longer. according to Gulf todayAn Arab man appeared before the Sharjah Misdemeanor Court after what he described as a simple spelling error in a WhatsApp exchange led to him being charged with electronic insult. The case was filed after one of the complainants, identified in court records as BF, accused the defendant of insulting him through messages sent via WhatsApp. Following the complaint, an official report was drawn up, which required legal action to be taken and the accused to appear before the court.During the session, the accused denied this charge. He told the court that he had no previous relationship with the complainant and that they were strangers.
He explained that their contacts began through a car sales website and that they had never met in person. He added that all exchanges between them took place via WhatsApp.Addressing the specific word mentioned in the complaint, the defendant asserted that it was not intended as an insult but rather was the result of a typographical error. He requested additional time to try to reach an amicable settlement with the complainant.
After studying the matter, the Sharjah Misdemeanor Court decided to postpone the session to give the two parties the opportunity to reconcile. The case underscores how simple digital interactions, including a single misplaced word, can carry legal implications when construed as defamatory under electronic communications laws.
