Years ago, when Anne Hathaway’s The Princess Diaries hit theaters, audiences couldn’t get enough of the girl’s movie. Since then, another sequel has been released, but plans for a third film never came to fruition.
However, the project finally got the confirmation it needed earlier this year. Not only that, but according to recent updates, the script for “Princess Diaries 3” has been completed, and the author of the original book is very excited about it!

Meg Cabot, who wrote the original novel series that inspired the 2001 film, recently revealed that she had seen the script for the third film! While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Cabot said that the script is ready and that she is very happy with the latest release.She said: “I read the script, and it was amazing. I told them not to send anymore, because I love it so much. They don’t like when you tell people what’s going to happen yet. So I said, ‘You better not send me any more scripts!’ She also shared that she wishes the production team had used the latest version of the script, as this is one of the best iterations she’s seen of the new film. “Well, that’s the option they’re going to use, but it’s a really fun idea, and I support it 100 percent,” she concluded.

The sequel was in development for years, after the sequel was released in 2004. However, in 2016, after the death of director Garry Marshall, the project was halted. In 2022, it was selected again and confirmed to be in development. Years later, in 2024, Anne Hathaway revealed that she would reprise her role as Princess Mia in the film.In April, during a conversation with PEOPLE, Kathleen Marshall, the late Marshall’s daughter, revealed more details about the upcoming project.
“We’re moving forward. I mean there’s a great team in place. So it’s coming. It’s coming,” she shared. Kathleen also expressed her excitement to be involved in anything related to “The Princess Diaries” franchise and revealed that she and producer Debra Martin Chase often exchange emails about the film’s development.Hathaway also touched on the topic while promoting her film “The Devil Wears Prada 2” in April.
While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, she said, “We are constantly working on it one hundred percent.” She also spoke about what fans want from the film, saying: “The expectations are very, very high, and if you’re going to do it, you’ve got to knock it out of the park.”
