Monica Islam was murdered on May 2, 2025.Prosecutors are now seeking the death penalty for Shahidul Islam, with the 44-year-old being charged this week with first-degree murder for the shooting death of Monica.“No family should have to endure the pain caused by such a horrific and senseless act of violence like this,” Florida Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingolia wrote in a statement. He added: “The martyr of Islam entered our country illegally after his deportation, committed this heinous crime and then fled to a safe city.”Monica Islam was reported missing on May 2. Hours after her reported disappearance, she was found with a gunshot wound to her head, lying on the side of the road. She was last seen walking towards Shahidul Islam’s car from the store where she worked. After killing Monica, Shahidul rented a car and drove to New York City. He was later tracked down and detained on a federal immigration warrant because he was illegal and deported.

Investigators discovered that on the day of the murder, Shahidul searched for information about the murders and arrests in Mount Dara and Eustis.Shahidul Islam was turned over to Lake County authorities on a charge of first-degree murder on May 31 of this year.Monica lived in the neighborhood with her daughter.
