As Spotify brings more AI capabilities to its platform, the company will soon allow users to create their own podcasts.
At the company’s Investor Day on Thursday, Spotify announced the addition of Personal Podcasts, which allows users to create podcasts directly within Spotify based on their interests and listening habits. The creation follows a similar mechanism to the current requested playlists segment, where users type a prompt into Spotify, which then generates audio based on the input.
Spotify offers the example: “You can create a daily digest, an in-depth look at a topic you’re curious about, or a weekly digest of whatever’s on your mind. Ask ‘Share my daily city updates and tell me about local concerts by artists I love’ or ‘Help me understand the economy in five minutes,’ and Spotify will create a personalized audio overview while linking you to relevant episodes, shows, and creators where you can explore more.”
Users can then schedule these podcasts to repeat daily or weekly, with the option to choose the audio and add more context through additional text, PDFs, or links. Episodes are only available to each individual through their library.
Personal podcasts will roll out to eligible premium users in the US starting next month, with a select number of monthly credits included, and the option to purchase more. Spotify also announced that it will release a new feature on Thursday, which allows users to ask Spotify questions about the podcasts they listen to and get answers.
“We are entering the Generative Era, where the experience is not just chosen from a catalog. It is shaped by each of our users, in real time, according to their taste, context and intentions… Today, there is no media player for both public and private content – or in other words – no media player for the Generative Era. We believe Spotify will become that,” Spotify co-CEO Gustav Soderström said as part of the investor presentation.
Additionally, Spotify unveiled Creator Sponsorships, a way for podcast creators to earn recurring revenue directly from their most engaged fans on Spotify. The company also unveiled a desktop app, Studio by Spotify Labs, which is a standalone desktop app that can also be used to create podcast audio, as well as connect to a user’s calendar, inbox, and notes.
In addition to these features, Spotify announced that it will reserve tickets to two concerts for dedicated fans who have Spotify Premium, before tickets go on sale, and will allow premium subscribers to make AI-generated covers and remixes of songs.
