Rerouting from flight to train or bus: Iranian delegation in Pakistan 'secretly boarded a different plane' amid security threat

A member of the Iranian delegation, Mohammad Marandi, claimed that the team that traveled to Pakistan for talks with the United States received “direct threats and credible intelligence” indicating that their plane could be attacked on their way to Islamabad, forcing them to change their return flight.Marandi said in an interview with the Lebanese Al-Mayadeen network that the plane diverted from its original course and landed in Mashhad, Iran, after which the delegation continued its way to Tehran by train, car and bus. He added that this step was taken after security warnings. He said: “We received direct threats and reliable intelligence information indicating that the Iranian delegation’s plane heading to Islamabad may be attacked.”

He added that the return flight was modified after the warning. He added, “The plane changed its course and landed in Mashhad, and the delegation was transported by train and vehicles to Tehran.”Marandi also noted the timing of the development and linked it to broader diplomatic tensions. “The negotiations ended very abruptly…in conjunction with the Washington Post op-ed,” he said, adding that they were “very close to the CIA.”

In describing the return, he said that the delegation chose to move forward despite the risks. “So the Iranians definitely felt threatened… Everyone got on the plane. No one wanted to stay in Pakistan and everyone was willing to take the risks,” he added. He also referred to Iranian civilians during recent tensions, saying the delegation remained calm despite the perceived danger. “The delegation was very steadfast and everyone was in very high spirits during the trip,” Marandi said, adding that their behavior was similar to “the Iranian people in the streets who took risks during the missile attacks and remained steadfast in the streets.”US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that talks aimed at ending the conflict with Iran could resume in Pakistan within the next two days, after the collapse of weekend negotiations. The New York Post quoted him as saying: “You should stay there… because something might happen in the next two days, and we are more inclined to go there.”
