Rajkumar Hirani has confirmed that the sequel to 3 Idiots is currently in development, while denying rumors of a fourth cast member joining forces with Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. He also explained that the title “4 Idiots” was a media creation, adding that the script was still being written.
Director Rajkumar Hirani has broken his silence on the much-awaited 3 Idiots sequel, confirming that the film is already in the works. The director indicated that the script is still under development and refused any addition to the crew.
After Aamir Khan confirmed that he is gearing up for a sequel to 3 Idiots, fans are buzzing with excitement. There were also reports of ‘The Fourth Fool’ starring R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi joining forces, with Vicky Kaushal’s name being bandied about as the new entrant. Now the director has put an end to these speculations.

In a chat with India Today, Hirani shed some light on where exactly the project stands, revealing that although the foundation has been laid, the script is still a work in progress.
“Aamir read a very early draft; the general idea is there. I don’t know… he must have been doing some media interviews [and spoken about it]. But we are still in the writing phase because we are very excited about it.”

Hirani also addressed rumors about a possible new character and the supposed title ‘4 Idiots’, setting the record straight with a laugh. Denying both speculations simultaneously, he said, “Mujhe bhi pata laga hai ki iska naam ‘4th Idiots’ hai.”
Woh maine nahi rakha, woh kahin media ne rakhi hai (I also knew it was titled 4 Idiots. I didn’t name it; the media just created this). Honestly, there is no 4th idiot, only 3 idiots, and it’s been 20 years [from where we ended].

The sequel has been in the news since talks about the beloved 2009 film first began. Aamir had earlier revealed that Hirani came to him with an idea for the story, and that everyone involved was excited to bring their favorite characters back to the big screen.Aamir also gave fans a glimpse of what to expect, stating that the film will catch up with Rancho, Farhan and Raju twenty years later. However, he was quick to add that the team has no intention of rushing the project and will only move forward with the project when it is confident that the story is worthy of bringing the world of “3 Idiots” to life.
