Here a Dalit youth was brutally assaulted and lost sight in one eye after an assailant punched a motorcycle key during a dispute over ex-defecation near a canal. the police said Monday.

According to the police, the incident took place on Friday afternoon when Rahul was defecating in a canal in Aorai area.

This led to a fight between the victim and accused Shankar Bind, as the latter objected to Rahul defecating near the canal. The attacker allegedly abused Rahul with caste-based slurs and beat him up.

When Rahul tried to escape, the accused pierced his left eye with a motorcycle key and threatened to kill him, Superintendent of Police Abhimanyu Manglik said, adding that the victim collapsed on the ground in severe pain.

When locals gathered, the accused fled from the spot.

The SP said the police reached the spot after receiving information and shifted the injured youth to a community health centre, from where he was later admitted to the district hospital.

“As the injury to his left eye was severe and he complained of vision loss, doctors referred him to the BHU trauma center in Varanasi on Sunday,” Manglik said.

He said a case was registered against accused Shankar Bind under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act based on the complaint of the victim’s father Ram Dhani.

Necessary legal action is being taken against the accused and further investigation is underway, the SP added.
