Meanwhile, the impasse between the opposition and the government intensified in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday when eight opposition MPs were suspended for what they described as “inappropriate behaviour”.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accused the government of not allowing him to continue with his speech on the motion of thanks to the President.
Prime Minister Modi will address the Lok Sabha
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to respond to the President’s motion of thanks in the Lok Sabha address today, as the face-off between the government and the opposition continues.
Both Houses of Parliament will continue debating the “Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address”. In the Lok Sabha, the motion was moved by Sarbananda Sonowal and seconded by Tejashwi Surya. The House has scheduled 18 hours for discussion and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to give his reply today.
In the Upper House, BJP MP Sadhanand Master moved the vote of thanks.
Eight Congress MPs have been suspended
A total of 8 Congress MPs have been suspended for the rest of the session.
Members include Manikom Thakur, Kiran Reddy, Prashant Padol, Hiby Eden, Amarinder Singh Raja Waring, Gurjit Aujla, S. Venkat Raman and Dean Kuriakos.
Congress leaders, led by Rahul Gandhi, staged a protest outside Parliament House against the expulsion of party members from the Lok Sabha.
Gandhi also wrote to Speaker Om Birla. In his letter, he expressed concern about the President’s speech being “prevented from speaking” on matters related to national security during the debate on the motion of thanks.
Budget Session of Parliament
The budget session will run for 30 meetings spanning 65 days and will end on April 2.
Both houses will break for recess on February 13 and meet again on March 9, allowing standing committees to review grant demands from various ministries and departments.
