Not Rohit Sharma or Ellyse Perry: Harmanpreet Kaur will become the first cricketer in history...

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur is set to achieve a major milestone on Sunday when she takes the field against South Africa in Manchester, becoming the first player – male or female – to appear in 200 T20 Internationals. This milestone comes during the Women’s T20 World Cup and represents a journey spanning 17 years, covering multiple generations of cricketers and the growth of women’s cricket on the global stage.Ireland’s Paul Sterling holds the record for playing most matches in men’s T20Is (163), while Rohit Sharma is second in men’s with 159 T20Is. In women’s T20Is, Kaur currently leads with 199 and is followed by New Zealand’s Susie Bates (184).

Australian legend Ellyse Perry is fourth in WT20Is with 177 appearances.Kaur made her T20I debut during the inaugural Women’s T20 World Cup in England in 2009. Seventeen years later, she is all set to play her 200th match in the format during the 10th edition of the tournament. Only six other players who were active besides her in 2009 are still playing international cricket. The 37-year-old will lead India in a key Group A match against South Africa at Old Trafford.

Indian bowling coach Avishkar Salvi praised Kaur’s contribution to the game and the team.“I think Harman is a high-level athlete,” he said. “She is a role model for almost all cricketers globally. The way she has conducted herself over the years has been a role model all along. She has been a performer in any format. She is playing her 200th T20, which is a big thing. We are all excited to watch her perform.”Salvi also highlighted the role Kaur plays in mentoring young players. He added: “And in terms of work ethic, she continues to work on the fundamentals. She shares a lot of experience with the youngsters. That’s also the dimension she comes into. Sometimes, there’s a lot of information out there, but it comes from someone who has performed well at the highest level, those little little points that she shares with the players, that actually help boost the careers of a lot of youngsters.”South Africa all-rounder Chloe Tryon, who plays alongside Kaur for Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Super League, also acknowledged the India captain’s achievement.“200 matches is a lot. She makes it look easy. I’ve had the opportunity to play alongside her, and watch her do her thing. It’s been amazing to watch her journey, when I was a young girl too, just looking up to the senior players. She’s been a role model for so many people around the world. To see her still playing cricket is amazing, leading from the front, which is really good to see. Hopefully she’ll have another 200 games to go. I don’t know how much she can do. Keep going, but look, it’s great to see You see how the women’s game has evolved and how it has pushed the game forward.

South Africa heads into the tournament needing a win after losing to Australia in its opening match in Manchester before defeating Pakistan in Edgbaston.Meanwhile, India have won their two matches so far, defeating Pakistan and the Netherlands.Despite India’s strong start to the tournament, South Africa had the upper hand in recent meetings between the two sides. The Proteas recently won a five-match T20I series at home 4-1.
