The Met Gala may not have generated as much advance chatter as the event that began Monday evening on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In fact, even a cursory glance at social media proves that fashionistas and newbies alike have thoughts about this year’s fundraiser for the museum’s Costume Institute, and how those strong opinions might influence the star-studded evening about to unfold.

The backlash began immediately after the announcement in February that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sanchez Bezos, would serve as honorary chairs for the evening, contributing $10 million to the franchise. Amid ongoing economic challenges that include rising gas and grocery prices, ICE protests and Amazon’s $1 million contribution to Donald Trump’s 2024 inauguration, Bezos’ participation in the Met Gala was seen as short-sighted, rubbing many New Yorkers and members of the fashion and entertainment industries the wrong way. This may manifest itself in the form of protests on the sidewalk across the street from the museum’s Fifth Avenue steps, which in the past have been largely occupied by cheering fans on as guests arrive.

Most official Met Gala live streams begin at 6 p.m., but look for early arrivals including the evening’s co-chairs: Anna Wintour, Condé Nast’s chief content officer, who has been overseeing the Met Gala since 1995, along with Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams and Beyoncé, who is attending her first Met Gala since 2016. Bezos and his wife are also likely to arrive at this time, along with members of the host committee — a buzzy list that includes Sabrina Carpenter, Teyana Taylor, Elizabeth Debicki, Chase Sue Wonders, and Blackpink’s Lisa – who would follow shortly after. Expected guests who will enter later are Madonna, Rihanna, Cher, The devil wears prada 2 Star Anne Hathaway and Hot competition Stars Hudson Williams and Connor Story.

The dress code for the gala, “Fashion is Art,” is a nod to the exhibition Fashion artwhich was shown to media and guests Monday morning at the museum, while Met Gala guests will also enjoy a first look at the exhibition presented in new galleries on the museum’s first floor. With this theme in mind, expect a variety of artistic touches on the carpet, worn by designer guests including Thom Browne, Gucci’s Demna, and Saint Laurent’s Anthony Vaccarello, who co-chairs the event’s host committee with Zoë Kravitz. Fashion art It opens to the public on Sunday, May 10 and runs until January 10, 2027.

Individual tickets to the invite-only Met Gala are priced at $100,000, while the starting price for tables is $350,000. All funds raised are used to fund the Costume Institute’s exhibitions, collectibles, publications and operations. The 2025 Met Gala raised $31 million, the largest amount raised at the annual event since it was first held in 1948.

Will the ongoing controversy dampen the attention this high-powered fashion event usually attracts? We’re about to find out – Hollywood Reporter This gallery will be updated with arrivals throughout the evening.
