Luigi Mangionethe suspect accused of killing the CEO of UnitedHealthcare Brian ThompsonHe has remained at the center of a closely watched legal case since Thompson was shot to death outside a Manhattan hotel in December 2024. Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after the shooting, after a McDonald’s employee reportedly recognized him from surveillance images released by authorities and alerted police.
At the time of his arrest, investigators said Mangione was carrying a firearm, false identification documents and other items they believe link him to the shooting. “This is a powerful and interesting person,” the former New York City mayor Eric Adams “He matches the description of the identity that we were looking for,” he said during a 2024 news conference. “He also has in his possession several items that we believe will link him to this incident.”
Mangione later pleaded not guilty to federal and state charges connected to Thompson’s death. In January 2026, a federal judge dismissed murder and weapons charges that would have made Mangione eligible for the death penalty, although he still faces several serious charges in both cases. Then, in May 2026, a New York judge ruled that some evidence recovered from Mangione’s backpack during his arrest could not be used at trial because the initial search was illegal. However, prosecutors will still be allowed to present other key pieces of evidence, including a gun, a silencer and a notebook found during a subsequent search of the police station. His formal trial is currently scheduled to begin on September 8, 2026.
