In a powerful march against the social “conditioning” of aging, Academy Award winner Kate Winslet shared a clear message for women entering their middle years: The best is yet to come. Kate addressed the common fear that hitting 40 or 50 marks the beginning of decline. She noted that women are often taught to expect a loss of intimacy and fading beauty as menopause approaches. Her response to the possibility of sagging skin or changing bodies? Simple “so what”.

Rather than fading away, Kate said aging brings a unique kind of vitality and strength not available to younger generations. She believed that when women shed the fears of youth, they acquired a magnetic, grounded energy. It also took aim at the standard of what makes a woman “look good,” specifically the historical relationship between beauty and weight loss. She urged women to lift each other up without relying on outdated metaphors.

Kate Winslet’s empowering quote about aging

Here’s exactly what Kate said: “We women in our 40s are so conditioned to think, ‘Okay, well, I’m crawling towards the end, you know.’ You think you’re going to hit menopause and you’re going to stop having sex and your breasts are going to sag and your skin is going to be terrible and all that stuff, but above all – so what. And secondly, it’s just conditioning, you know. I think women, as they get older, become more attractive and attractive, more immersed in who they are and who they are, more powerful and more able to walk through the world and not care as much. This is empowering. So I say to my friends all the time, “Oh my God, you look great, you look great.” Don’t you feel good?… We have to do this, it’s very important. And it doesn’t mean you look great (because) you lost weight. And that’s the other thing… interpreting that compliment. So, I don’t do any of that anymore.”

Kate’s comments come at a time when Hollywood’s “silver ceiling” is being shattered by actors demanding more complex and authentic roles that reflect the reality of femininity at every stage of life.
