'Is the fight for Green Card worth it?' H-1B visa holder says he has decent money but can see parents once every two years

A Reddit user shares why even though there are H-1Bs in the US, life is not fulfilling.

Obtaining an H-1B visa is a dream come true for many in the US where the work visa has provided a foothold for several years, but one Redditor who shared how it all went down began to question whether the fight was worth it.

The Redditor came to the US to earn his master’s degree in 2018 and later got a job at a tech company. On his third attempt, he was selected in the H-1B lottery as well in 2022. “Now I am waiting for my residence permit permit to be approved so I can finally apply for the I-140,” the post read.Giving an overview of life in the US, the Redditor wrote: “I work long hours. My social life is limited. I see my parents once every two years because taking vacation is difficult and flights are expensive.

My friends back home are buying houses and starting families while I’m still confirming my visa status and whether I can change jobs.”

Is it worth it, asks one Redditor about the green card.

The post added: “Some people are happier after returning home. Priorities change as you get older. Many people realize they are here for the money but their hearts are elsewhere.”The 31-year-old has good money, but said he is always one step away from getting 60 days to leave the country.

The comments section of the Reddit post provided an interesting discussion where most of the responses said that waiting for the green card, stressing over the visa until one gets the green card is not worth it as life in India has become easy even though it is difficult to make the decision to return to India. Many have come to Canada as a third and safer option rather than choosing between India and the US.One respondent who claimed to be a lawyer said the choice between India and the US depends on several factors. “If someone has strong financial support, a stable support system, and real opportunities waiting in India, then returning can make sense,” this person wrote. “But that is not the situation for most people navigating the immigration process in the United States. Many have taken real financial risks to be here, including loans, relocation costs, and missed opportunities elsewhere.”
