IPL 2026: Sunil Narine scripts history, becomes first overseas player to...

Sunil Narine etched his name deeper into the history of the Indian Premier League on Saturday after becoming the first overseas cricketer and the 13th player overall to complete 200 matches in the Indian Premier League. The feat came during Kolkata Knight Riders’ clash against Gujarat Titans, with KKR fighting hard to stay alive in the IPL 2026 playoff race.

GT won the toss and chose to bowl first, while KKR also welcomed back mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy from injury.

Narine’s ISL journey began in 2012 when he made his debut for KKR against Rajasthan Royals. Over the past 14 seasons, the West Indies all-rounder has transformed into one of the most influential and versatile players in the league, playing a key role in KKR’s success through different eras. Primarily known for revolutionizing T20 bowling with his enigmatic variations, Narine has taken 203 wickets in 200 matches at an impressive economy rate of 6.79, making him one of the most economical bowlers in IPL history.

Even in an era dominated by increasingly aggressive batting, Narine has continued to maintain control of the ball. The 2026 season was another reminder of his value. In a tournament where scores in excess of 200 are becoming increasingly common, Narine picked up 11 wickets while conceding at an economy of just 6.64 – figures that stand out sharply in a batting-heavy season. Besides his bowling exploits, Narine has also reinvented himself as a dangerous bowler at the top of the order in recent years.

During his IPL career, he scored 1820 runs at an impressive strike rate of 165.30 and average of 17.33, often providing explosive starts for KKR in the powerplay. While KKR have struggled this season and currently sit eighth in the points table with just four wins from 11 matches, Narine’s historic emergence adds another historic chapter to one of the most unique careers in the league. The three-time champions now face a must-win situation in their final three league matches after their latest defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru significantly damaged their playoff hopes.
