Director Imtiaz Ali shared an interesting behind-the-scenes story of the making of ‘Timsha’, which has a huge fan following. Years after the film’s release, fans continue to celebrate many emotional moments from the romantic drama starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. One such scene, set against the stunning landscape of Corsica, remains among the film’s most treasured scenes.
Interestingly, this moment was never planned as part of the script. According to Imtiaz Ali, he appeared naturally during filming and eventually became part of the final cut. The director recently looked back on how this memorable sequence was put together in an interview with Pinkvilla.
The location that inspired an unexpected scene in ‘Tamaşa’
While filming in Corsica, the team came across a picturesque location that immediately caught Imtiaz Ali’s attention. However, getting to the place wasn’t part of the original plan.
Explaining how this sequence came about, the director said, “That shot wasn’t really planned in the film. It just happened that way. The place was there and we weren’t supposed to go there because it was dangerous… And I went and climbed there first to see yeh ho sakta hain kya (Could this really happen)? When I got there I asked Ranbir to come there immediately. The shot was just of him sitting there silently.” Initially, the director envisioned a simple scene of Ranbir Kapoor’s character calmly taking in the surroundings.
The idea was simple, relying on silence and atmosphere instead of dialogue. But what happened next changed the whole scene.
Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone added their own charm
According to Imtiaz, the sequence developed organically once the actors arrived on location. “Then I remember Ranbir saying, ‘Nahi sir mein upaar nahi chadunga (I won’t climb there)!'” recalls the director. So I said yes, no need to come here, just come a little closer, and anyway he came to this place and sat there.
Then Deepika also came and told her to sit there. I didn’t tell them anything, they just felt it.
I just rolled the camera!” Without detailed instructions or rehearsals, both actors simply responded to the mood of the moment.
Which actor do you think contributed the most to the realism of the scene?
Why does the “Tamsha” scene still connect with the audience?
One of the reasons “Tamasha” continues to connect with audiences is her ability to capture emotions in a simple yet powerful way. The Corsican scene stands out because of its silence, its natural performances, and its emotional honesty. ‘Tamasha’ follows the journey of Ved and Tara, played by Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. Although the film received a moderate response during its initial theatrical run, its reputation has grown significantly over the years.Meanwhile, Imtiaz Ali is gearing up for the release of his next directorial venture ‘Main Vaapas Aaunga’.
