Christopher Nolan noticed one actor in Odyssey He performed their scene so spectacularly that his crew burst into applause — and it’s been almost 20 years since that happened.
Nolan singled out Samantha Morton (Minority report, The walking dead), who plays the goddess Circe, despite her relatively short screen time.
“This was a huge movie and she’s the person who comes in and changes the dynamic,” Nolan said. I’ve always admired Samantha’s work, she brings a lot of deep thought to her role, and there are no constraints to her performance. After one of her takes, the crew gave her a huge round of applause. Nolan also explained that he wanted a cast that included famous actors, noting, “These are characters that are legendary and iconic in some ways. I wanted to cast them on a large scale, and get the best ensemble cast.”
The director said he chose Matt Damon, who plays the tortured hero Odysseus, because of the actor’s talent for making his characters accessible and his ability to pull off a lot of intense physical action.
“I’ve worked with Matt twice before, and he has a great relationship with the audience, he draws them to him,” Nolan said. “For such a complex character, you need an actor who disappears in parts, who is very open to the audience. You want the audience to go along with him in his mistakes – and he makes a lot of mistakes. Nolan added: “We were going to really challenging locations, doing a lot of boat work, and he helped lead that process. Meanwhile, another actor in the film, Robert Pattinson, who plays Antoninus, is making headlines for comparing his character to Jacob from twilight.
