Christopher Nolan noticed one actor in Odyssey He performed their scene so spectacularly that his crew burst into applause — and it’s been almost 20 years since that happened.

Nolan singled out Samantha Morton (Minority report, The walking dead), who plays the goddess Circe, despite her relatively short screen time.

“This was a huge movie and she’s the person who comes in and changes the dynamic,” Nolan said. Los Angeles Times In a spoiler-filled interview. “In a weird way, the movie lived or died because of that character. She was a fulcrum. I’ve always admired Samantha’s work, she brings a lot of deep thought to her role, and there are no constraints to her performance. After one of her takes, the crew gave her a huge round of applause. I was talking to Emma [Thomas, Nolan’s producing partner and wife] Then I remembered that the last time this happened was with Heath Ledger Dark Knight“.

Likewise, Morton received praise in some of the film’s early reactions from journalists (“Samantha Morton steals the show well with the few scenes she’s in,” one critic wrote for The Independent).

Nolan also explained that he wanted a cast that included famous actors, noting, “These are characters that are legendary and iconic in some ways. I wanted to cast them on a large scale, and get the best ensemble cast.”

The director said he chose Matt Damon, who plays the tortured hero Odysseus, because of the actor’s talent for making his characters accessible and his ability to pull off a lot of intense physical action.

“I’ve worked with Matt twice before, and he has a great relationship with the audience, he draws them to him,” Nolan said. “For such a complex character, you need an actor who disappears in parts, who is very open to the audience. You want the audience to go along with him in his mistakes – and he makes a lot of mistakes. Matt was his everyman.” MartianA kind of superhero in the Jason Bourne films, Odysseus is part everyman, part superhuman.

Nolan added: “We were going to really challenging locations, doing a lot of boat work, and he helped lead that process. The rest of the cast, a cadre of guys who had recently worked on rowing, looked up to him and everyone saw what he was doing for the film. Without Matt, we would have been better off doing it on stage proper.”

Meanwhile, another actor in the film, Robert Pattinson, who plays Antoninus, is making headlines for comparing his character to Jacob from twilight. Pattison is best known for playing the vampire Edward in the teen fantasy saga, who vies with werewolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner) for the affection of Bella (Kristen Stewart). “I keep comparing her…he’s kind of like Jacob twilight“Penelope can’t decide between the two men and I’m just trying to help her decide,” Pattison said on the red carpet for the film’s London premiere on Monday. “decent.” [Odysseus is] Dead, get over it.”

Odyssey The film tells the story of Odysseus’ long, fantastical journey home after the Trojan War, returning to the kingdom of Ithaca to rescue his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland). Odyssey It is the first film to be shot entirely in IMAX format and lasts 2 hours and 53 minutes.

Odyssey Opens in theaters July 17.
