Charli XCX is back, but it looks like Brat Summer is officially over.
The pop star released her new single “Rock” on Friday, along with an accompanying music video, as Charli sings: “I think the dance floor is dead, so now we’re making rock.”
How much of the British star’s song is considered rock music will certainly be up for debate, but it certainly has a clear rock influence, as evidenced by some heavily distorted guitar that matches her synthesized vocals.
In the music video, Charli wanders through a black-and-white city, hanging out with men and chain-smoking in a black-and-white scene that only takes color when the chorus hits and announces “Rock.”
“For me, it’s fun to flip the paradigm,” Charlie told the British newspaper. Vogue magazine Back in April for her final song. “We know there are going to be people who are upset about this, but that’s okay.”
“Rock Music” comes at a time when Charli XCX has become increasingly involved in the world of film. released an accompanying album Wuthering Heights Back in February, and co-wrote much of the soundtrack for Mother Maryam With Jack Antonoff too. Of course she also produced and starred in her own mockumentary moment, Which was released in January.
Aside from recordings, Charlie is set to play some high-profile festivals this summer as well. She’s headlining Lollapalooza in Chicago in July, Outside Lands in San Francisco in August, and Austin City Limits in October.
