Simone Ledward Boseman, widow of beloved actor Chadwick Boseman, gave a rare interview to… Hollywood ReporterAn in-depth oral history of the coronavirus Oscars ceremony held five years ago, at which she shared, for the first time, the remarks she said He was If her husband hadn’t been upset in the Best Actor race, he might have been nominated for his performance in it Ma Rainey’s black bottom – At the end of the night.

“I wrote a whole speech,” Ledward Boseman recalled. “I wonder if I have that in my notes.” After searching for it on her computer, she found it: “Oh! I will never stop thanking God for you. Thanks to God Almighty. Thank you, Caroline and Leroy Boseman [Chadwick’s parents]And your mothers and your mothers’ mothers. What purity. What honesty. What pain. What a role. What to do. How beautiful is this complex humanity. What courage, bravery, bravery, honesty, commitment, humanity and strength. A soul that refused to give in to despair. What an actor. What an artist. What a cast. What a team. What a vision. Glory be to God the Most High. “Long live the king.”

Earlier in the article, Ledward Boseman spoke about her late husband’s private, years-long battle with colon cancer, and how the coronavirus outbreak affected their lives at the time. “It’s very strange to talk about it in these words because obviously with the coronavirus a lot of people have lost loved ones,” she said. “But the timing of the closure because of what we’ve been through was honestly perfect. And I’m really grateful for that timing,” he added.

To the shock of the world, Boseman died on August 28, 2020. This was several months before the film was released. What a rainy daybut Ledward Boseman confirmed that he had actually seen the film that would go on to receive a lot of acclaim, and was even aware of the potential for award recognition.

“We had the opportunity to watch it because he was going to have to work in journalism. What I remember most, more than watching the movie, is the conversations about knowing they were going into awards season and coming to terms with what he was going to be able to participate in and what he wasn’t going to be able to do because of where he was. Those were tough conversations. I think that’s when his team members started to realize, ‘Okay, something’s wrong.’

After Boseman’s death, he was nominated for every major Oscar, and after his name was called at the virtual Golden Globe, Critics Choice and SAG Awards, Ledward Boseman appeared on screen and delivered powerful acceptance speeches on his behalf. “It was very comforting to be able to talk about it, but it was hard to know what to say because I couldn’t say what he “I was going to say,” she admitted. “I wanted people to be able to hear him in any way I could, so I started going through his notebooks to find: ‘What can I offer that would feel like he still had his spirit?’ It was an honor to be able to do that for him.”

On March 15, 2021, Boseman was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. (He was only the fifth person to receive a posthumous nomination in this category, after James Dean, Spencer Tracy, Peter Finch, and Massimo Troisi.) In announcing the nominations, the Academy confirmed that the 93rd Academy Awards would be held entirely in person — unlike any of the previous awards ceremonies — at downtown Los Angeles’ historic Union Station or one of 13 “hubs” in major cities around the world, with no option to pre-record a speech or zoom in. From home.

Ledward Boseman decided to attend the ceremony, and prepared the aforementioned speech in case her husband’s name was mentioned. “I felt a lot of pressure to get it right at that moment,” she said five years later. “I went with his best friend, Logan Coles, and his publicist, Nicky Fioravanti, so it wasn’t like I was alone. But just because he wasn’t there? I wish I had the words to say how lonely it really was.”

Considering that Boseman’s performance was recognized at every major award except the BAFTA, which Anthony Hopkins won for… fatherThe producers of the Academy Awards made a fateful decision: saving the Best Actor award presentation for last. When Joaquin Phoenix opened the envelope and read the name on the card inside, it was not Boseman, but Hopkins, drawing gasps in the room. (Hopkins, at 83, became the oldest acting Oscar winner ever. He was sleeping at his home in Wales, having decided not to risk his health by traveling to a hub in Europe, and after being told he could not pre-record his acceptance speech or join the telecast via Zoom.)

“And then it was over,” Ledward Boseman recalled. “It was awkward. Maybe a little uncomfortable. But the Best Actor nomination is still an incredible accomplishment and still a recognition of his work. I don’t think it was the producers’ intention for it to be uncomfortable… Looking back, it would have been better if Best Picture had been last. It would have been a nice reset before the end of the night to have another celebratory moment, for someone who would have hopefully come on stage and accepted the award and given a speech and all that.”

Ledward Boseman, who never appeared on camera during the telecast, took the news in stride. “Denzel[Washingtonwhoproduced[WashingtonwhoproducedWhat a rainy day]He presented as a gift a dog tag with a cross inscribed on it, “Man gives the reward, God gives the reward.” I think that sums it up really perfectly.

The next morning, Hopkins posted a video on Instagram: “Good morning. I’m here back home in Wales, and I’m 83 years old. I didn’t expect to get this award. I really didn’t expect it. And I’m so grateful to the Academy, and thank you. And I want to pay tribute to Chadwick Boseman, who was taken from us far too soon. And again, thank you all so much. I really didn’t expect this, so I’m very proud and honored. Thank you.”

“It was very beautiful and very wonderful and very kind and thoughtful of him to include Chad in his acceptance speech. It’s not something he had to do,” says Ledward Boseman.
