Broadway canceled all of its shows on February 23 amid blizzard conditions in New York City.
The cancellation of the February 23 shows comes after the Broadway theater owners and producers also canceled all evening performances on February 22. Sunday morning shows continued as scheduled.
Many productions traditionally do not have Monday night shows on the schedule. However, productions such as great Gatsby, Chicago and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and six They will be canceling their shows on February 23rd. The move comes as New York City received between 16 to 19 inches of snow across the city and New York remains under a state of emergency due to snowfall and high winds. The snow is expected to continue until at least 8 p.m., with 40 mph winds and another 1.5-2.5 inches expected. New York City Mayor Zahran Mamdani has lifted the travel ban that had been in place since Sunday evening, but a dangerous travel advisory remains in place for the city. Travel bans in surrounding counties remain in place.
“Due to the ongoing impacts of the snowstorm and local travel restrictions that remain in place, the Broadway theater owners and producers have reached a consensus to cancel performances tonight (Monday, February 23),” the Broadway League said in a statement.
The move to cancel Broadway shows is rare, because it can result in hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost revenue per production. However, Broadway faced uproar from cast and crew about a month ago, when New York City was under a snow emergency, but there were no industry-wide cancellations of shows.
