An 18-year-old Sri Lankan Tamil refugee was killed and her friend seriously injured after a two-wheeler collided under the Koyambedu Bridge in Chennai, Tamil Nadu in the early hours of Saturday, police said.
The road rage incident was an extension of a verbal altercation that broke out between the deceased’s group and a group of men at a private bar in Koyambedu on Saturday, May 30.
The victim, identified as Yancey, a resident of Villupuram area, went dancing with her 17-year-old friend at the private bar, police said.

The two girls were dancing in the club with their friends when a verbal altercation broke out between Yancey’s group and a group of men, and it quickly escalated into a fight.
Police said that the club’s guards intervened to calm the situation before the two groups were expelled.
“However, the two groups became involved in a dispute near a shop outside the pub, and the same bouncers again intervened and removed them,” a police statement said.

Shortly thereafter, Yancey and her friend left the spot on two wheels and traveled towards Thirumangalam. While they were on their way, the deceased’s friend threw stones at the men’s car.
The police statement added that the men, angered by this act, accelerated their car and collided with Yancey’s two-wheeler.
“Yancy died on the spot while her friend who was nearby was seriously injured and was sent to Kilpauk Government Hospital for treatment,” the statement said.

The police registered a case against six people, three of whom were arrested. The three arrested men have been identified as Balaguru, 21, Joshua, 19, and Kishorekumar, 19. The authorities also confiscated the car used in the crime.
They added that the police formed a special team to track down the fleeing perpetrators. This matter is being investigated further.
