Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman was awarded the Tamil Nadu State Award for Best Music Director for his work in the Mani Ratnamthe historical epic Ponniyin Selvan – I. The recognition adds another milestone to Rahman’s illustrious career that spans decades and includes state, national and international accolades.While announcing the award, Rahman addressed X to express his gratitude to the Tamil Nadu government. “It is an honor to receive the Tamil Nadu State Award for Best Music Director for Ponniyin Selvan – I. I sincerely thank the Tamil Nadu Government for this recognition. Congratulations to all the other awardees,” he wrote.Rahman’s score for Ponniyin Selvan has been much praised for its flawless blend of classical Carnatic influences with a grand cinematic sweep that played a crucial role in shaping the film’s emotional and narrative depth.

Clarifying my remarks after backlash online

The announcement of the award came shortly after Rahman found himself at the center of an online debate following remarks he made in a recent interview. “People who aren’t creative now have the right to decide things, and it could have been a communal thing too, but not in my face,” he said, sparking criticism and debate on social media.Addressing the backlash, Rahman shared a video message on Instagram on Sunday, clarifying his intention and stressing that he never meant to hurt feelings.

“India is my inspiration, my teacher and my home. I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood. But my aim has always been to uplift, honor and serve through music. I never meant to cause pain and I hope my sincerity comes through,” he said. He also added, “I feel blessed to be Indian, which allows me to create a space that always allows for freedom of expression and celebrates multicultural voices.
