'Anthony': Sunny Deol starts AR Murugadoss thriller with Vijay Varma as antagonist - reports

Sunny Deol begins shooting for Antony after the Rs 480-crore global success of Border 2. This thriller, directed by Balaji Ganesh and backed by Excel Entertainment and AR Murugadoss, stars Vijay Varma in the role of the villain. At 68 years old, veteran actor Sunny Deol shows no signs of slowing down. This year marks the actor’s best run, with five consecutive releases, according to latest reports. After the massive box office success of his last release, ‘Border 2’, which collected over Rs.

480 crore worldwide, the action star has now officially started shooting for his upcoming thriller ‘Anthony’. The film, directed by debutant Balaji Ganesh and produced by Excel Entertainment in association with AR Murugadoss, features Vijay Varma as the primary antagonist.

Sunny Deol is back in Antony

According to Variety India, shooting for the project began on February 27 in Mumbai and is scheduled to wrap by July 2026, targeting a theatrical release in early 2027.

The film is produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s Excel Entertainment, in partnership with AR Murugadoss Productions.

‘Antony’ is touted to be an action-thriller filled with suspense, showcasing Deol in an action-packed avatar. The film is directed by newcomer Balaji Ganesh, a filmmaker from Chennai who has earlier helped Murugadoss in several major productions.

Anurag Singh’s ‘Border 2’ starring Sunny Deol has become the biggest box office smash of 2026 so far.

The 1971 Indo-Pak war story has grossed over Rs 327 crore nett domestically and around Rs 450 crore globally over 39 days. Deol’s next project, Shashank Udapurkar’s ‘Gabru’, will hit theaters on May 8, 2026, featuring him in a highly poignant role filled with power, emotion and authentic storytelling.

Sunny Deol has two more films slated for release this year. Rajkumar Santoshi’s action-drama ‘Lahore 1947’ hits theaters over the Independence Day weekend, while director Nitish Tiwari’s much-awaited ‘Ramayana Part 1’ hits theaters during Diwali. In the latter, Lord Hanuman is depicted.
