Adrian Grenier calls not returning for ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ a ‘disappointment,’ blames backlash on character

Upcoming sequel to The devil wears Prada It impressed fans of the 2006 original film, although one of the iconic characters from the first film won’t be in the mix.

Adrian Grenier – who played Nate, Andy’s friend Anne Hathaway – spoke out. A number of original cast members reprise their roles from the sequel, including Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton, and Stanley Tucci as Nigel Kipling.

“We’re all fans of the movie, whether we were in it or not,” Grenier said. “Obviously it was disappointing not to get the call to be in the sequel. But I also understand that there was some backlash with Nate’s character, so that may have had something to do with it.”

When asked if he really thought the negative public perception of Nate was the reason his character wouldn’t return, Grenier responded with a laugh: “As opposed to what?”

He then added, “Either way, it’s a letdown, and either way, it leaves room for a nice spinoff where Nate has his own movie.”

Adapted from Lauren Weisberger’s best-selling novel The devil wears Pradacenters on aspiring journalist Andy as he navigates a coveted job as assistant to demanding fashion editor Miranda Priestly. Over the years, fans have taken to social media to criticize Nate for his apparent lack of support for his girlfriend as she deals with her job.

During a 2021 interview with Entertainment WeeklyGrenier noted that fans’ response to Nate initially surprised him.

“I didn’t see some of the subtleties and nuances of this character and what she represents in the movie until the wisdom of the crowd kicked in and started putting pressure on the character and throwing her under the bus, and she was attacked.” footnote The alum said at the time.

The actor added, “Maybe I was as immature as him at that time, so I personally couldn’t see his flaws. But after time to think and a lot of deliberation, I realized the truth from that perspective.”
