An Indian tourist died in hospital after being rescued from the ocean in the Florida Keys atoll earlier this month. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said 45-year-old Abhinav Lamba was swimming at Molasses Reef at about 11 a.m. on March 18 when he appeared to be in distress and sank below the surface. He was discovered by a commercial dive boat crew who found him in approximately 25 feet of water. They brought him to a commercial diving ship, began CPR and then transported him to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, where he was pronounced dead. Autopsy reports were pending when the incident was reported locally. Investigators did not suspect any crime. Molasses Reef is located within a federal marine reserve off Key Largo.
The Miami Herald reported that it is a protected area, fishing is not permitted, and it is teeming with marine life, making it a popular location for diving and snorkeling.Another report stated that this was the second diving-related death within a week. A 71-year-old Missouri man died March 13 after diving aboard the sunken ship Eagle off the coast of Islamorada. The man, Lonnie Lee Higgins, was found at the bottom of the ocean at a depth of about 110 feet by divers. The Sheriff’s Office did not provide any details about Abhinav Lamba as to whether he was alone or had family members at the scene.
