Five Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel were killed in the crash of an AN-32 transport plane at Jorhat Air Base in Assam.

The accident occurred when the twin-engine turboprop plane was trying to land at the Jorhat air base in Assam on Saturday.

The Indian Air Force said in a statement that it regrets the loss of five personnel in the An-32 plane accident in Jorhat, Assam.

“Squadron Prashant Singh, Sub-Lieutenant Shubham Kumar, Sergeant Jitendra Sharma, Agniverevayu Kemaram Kumawat and Agniverevayu Danish Alam have made the supreme sacrifices in the line of duty,” the statement read.

A court of inquiry also ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident that occurred at the Jorhat Air Force Station.

Footage from Jorhat Airport showed the plane splitting into two parts at the airstrip after the crash. Debris could be seen lying next to the runway even as rescue and emergency workers attempted to put out the fire.

The AN-32 is a twin-engine military transport aircraft that has been extensively used by the Indian Air Force in logistics, cargo transportation and operational support missions across diverse terrain, including high altitude and remote areas.
