An Indian woman living in San Francisco sparked an online conversation after she shared how she and her husband manage finances and household responsibilities while raising children in a dual-income household.

Ms. Shivi Chauhan posted a video clip on Instagram explaining how the couple divides expenses and household chores, and provides a glimpse into their financial arrangement.
A practical approach to expense management
Chauhan posted on Instagram a clip describing how the couple deals with their combined annual income, which she said exceeds $250,000. “My husband and I make over $250,000 a year, and this is how we split our expenses,” she explained in the video. My husband pays the mortgage and taxes on our house in San Francisco, and I pay everything else, including daycare costs and credit card bills. Our credit card bills include everything: gas, groceries, public transportation, utilities, travel, literally everything.”
Despite this arrangement, the couple ultimately contributes equally, she added. “The split you offered works well for us because even with that split, we’re spending 50-50. Yes, mortgage and property taxes in San Francisco can be very high.”
Chauhan also noted that major purchases are being discussed in advance. “When it comes to buying something expensive, like I bought this Cartier bracelet, we talk to each other in advance so we’re on the same page. “Honestly, I don’t buy a lot of luxury products, maybe once every two years.”
The video was shared with the caption: “How we split expenses as a dual income family with kids.”
An equal partnership goes beyond finances
Aside from financial matters, Chauhan stressed that the couple applies the same principle to household responsibilities. She said they divided the housework equally to avoid imbalance after becoming parents. “We have our own brokerage accounts where we invest separately, and it’s not just 50-50 on our expenses. We also invest 50-50 in our home business.”
“So I clean, he cleans, I cook, he cooks, I do laundry, he takes out the trash, I help with homework, he drives and picks up the kids from school,” she explained. She added that sharing household chores also prevents additional expenses that might arise from hiring outside help. Cheers!”

Curious viewers also asked practical questions, with one asking: “How do you split travel expenses?” “We don’t do that. It’s all through credit cards that I pay for,” Chauhan replied.
Others chimed in on her approach, with one user saying: “Same with our family, we’ve been following the same plan for the last 10 years and it’s worked well,” while another added, “Thank you for sharing this information. I’ve heard SFO is very expensive.”
