The knockout stages always produce new stories, and Wednesday night’s Round of 32 match at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium promises another compelling chapter when the USA hosts Bosnia and Herzegovina in a winner-take-all clash in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Playing at home brought huge expectations for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, but it also brought opportunities. After topping Group D with six points, the American team is three wins away from equaling its best World Cup record in the modern era, but first it must overcome the Bosnian team, which has already exceeded all expectations.

The United States made a strong start to the tournament. The exciting 4-2 win over Paraguay demonstrated the speed and fluidity of Pochettino’s attacking football, before a 2-0 win over Australia ensured qualification with a game to go. Having already secured first place, several key players were rested during the 3-2 defeat to Türkiye, allowing key players to reach the knockout stages.

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s path has been considerably more dramatic. After reaching the finals with a playoff win over Italy, Sergi Barbarez led his team through a difficult Group B campaign. The group opened with a 1-1 draw with Canada before suffering a 4-1 defeat to group leaders Switzerland. Facing elimination in their final group match, Bosnia responded brilliantly by defeating Qatar 3-1 to finish the tournament with four points and advance as one of the best third-placed teams in the tournament.

This will be the first competitive meeting between the two countries and the first meeting between them in the history of the FIFA World Cup. The United States national team maintained its record undefeated in its previous three matches, achieving two victories and one draw, although all of them came in international friendly matches.

Naturally, the spotlight will be focused largely on Christian Pulisic, who managed much of the American national team’s offensive attacks throughout the tournament. Alongside him, Folarin Balogun returns after being rested against Türkiye and is expected to lead the American attack. Behind them, the defensive partnership will once again be tasked with dealing with one of Europe’s most experienced strikers.

Bosnia still relies on veteran striker Edin Dzeko, whose leadership, physical presence and attacking style remain a key component of their attacking approach despite reaching the age of 40. There is also an interesting subplot involving Izmir Bajraktarevic, the Wisconsin-born winger who represented the United States at youth level before switching his international allegiance to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Tactically, the contest presents a clash of contrasting philosophies. The USA will try to control transitions with pace, width and strong pressing, while Bosnia will be expected to remain compact defensively before looking to quickly release Dzeko and its players on the counter-attack.

According to Opta’s supercomputer, the United States enters as favorites with a 67.5 percent chance of winning in regulation time and a 76.6 percent chance of advancing. However, history offers a cautionary note. The Americans have not been able to defeat a European opponent in a World Cup knockout match since reaching the quarter-finals in 2002, meaning another big hurdle remains for the host nation.

Whoever wins in Santa Clara will move to Seattle for a Round of 16 meeting with Belgium or Senegal.
