India captain Shreyas Iyer added another milestone to his growing international career by crossing 5,000 ODI runs during the first T20I against England at the Riverside Stadium on Wednesday.
This landmark came in the captaincy innings when India needed him the most.
Entering with the visitors reeling at 6/2 after the early dismissal of Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan, Iyer steadied the innings with 68 off 47 balls, hitting six fours and a six to take India to 189/7.

Iyer focuses on India’s recovery
India’s innings started disastrously when Sanju Samson left for one before Ishan Kishan was run out for a duck, leaving the visitors under immediate pressure. Abhishek Sharma then mounted a stunning counter-attack, scoring a 20-ball half-century before smashing 59 balls off just 24 deliveries.
During his explosive batting, the left-hander also became the fastest batsman from a full-fledged nation to reach 100 T20I sixes, surpassing Evin Lewis’ record.After Abhishek’s dismissal, Iyer took complete control of the innings. Shortly after the innings ended, the rain never stopped and they played spoiler sports in the series opener and the match was abandoned as the cut-off time was in for another 45 minutes or so after the first innings but they didn’t have enough time to prepare the ground, even if the rain stopped which it didn’t.
