Moroccan midfielder Ismail Sibari wrote his name in the history books after scoring the quickest goal in the 2026 World Cup so far, giving the Atlas Lions a flying start against Scotland in a pivotal Group C encounter at Boston Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

The fastest goal in men’s World Cup history remains Turkey’s Hakan Sukur, who scored after just 10.8 seconds against South Korea in the third-place match at the 2002 World Cup.At the time of writing, Morocco led Scotland 1-0 in the early stages of the Group C match thanks to Saibari’s record-breaking goal. With both teams entering the match knowing that a win could significantly boost their chances of reaching the round of 32, Morocco needed just 71 seconds to make their statement.

Saibari’s goal, officially scored in the second minute, surpassed all previous goals in the 2026 tournament and immediately gave Oualid Regragui’s side a 1-0 lead over Steve Clarke’s men.The goal came in a match that carries great importance for the group’s standings. Scotland entered the competition with three points after defeating Haiti 1-0 in the opening match, while Morocco earned a valuable 1-1 draw with tournament candidate Brazil.

A victory for Scotland would ensure qualification for the knockout stage with at least one match to go, while Morocco knew that three points would put them in control of their fate before the final round of matches.

Al-Sibari scores after Morocco caught a cold in Scotland

The breakthrough came almost immediately after kickoff. Morocco pressed from the opening exchanges and completely surprised the Scottish defense with quick attacking movement. Brahim Diaz, one of the creative players in the Moroccan team, discovered a gap in the Scottish backline and sent a precise through ball that broke through the defence.Al-Sibari timed it perfectly and passed the ball before calmly slotting home, sending the Moroccan fans inside Boston Stadium celebrating. The move was an excellent example of Morocco’s direct attacking intent, combining Diaz’s vision with Saibari’s intelligent movement and finishing.

There was a brief pause as semi-automated VAR reviewed play, but the goal was eventually confirmed, officially giving Morocco a 1-0 lead and setting a new standard for the fastest goal in the tournament. The strike immediately changed the complexion of the match. Scotland, who had been hoping to force action and move within touching distance of the knockout rounds, suddenly found themselves chasing a game against one of the most tactically disciplined teams in the competition.

A new record has been created for the fastest goal

Saibari’s goal now stands at the top of the list of fastest goals in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.Before Morocco’s confrontation with Scotland, the fastest goal in the tournament was scored by Czech midfielder Michal Sadlec, who scored after five minutes and eight seconds against South Africa.

German Felix Nmecha ranked second on the list after scoring against Curacao in five minutes and 16 seconds, while Paraguay defender Damian Bobadilla’s own goal against the United States ranked third at six minutes and 12 seconds.

Who is Ismail Al-Sibari?

While the goal itself was impressive, it is also the latest milestone in the meteoric rise of one of Morocco’s most exciting attacking talents.Saibari currently plays as an attacking midfielder and striker for PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie. He reached the World Cup after an impressive 2025-26 season in which he scored 15 league goals, helped PSV Eindhoven to a third consecutive Eredivisie title and was named Eredivisie Player of the Year. The 25-year-old made his debut for the Moroccan national team in 2023 and quickly became a key figure for the Atlas Lions.

Interestingly, Saibari was born in Spain and grew up in Belgium, meaning he was eligible to represent multiple countries. Making World Cup history

Saibari’s goal against Scotland is not only important because of his speed. The PSV Eindhoven star has now become the first player in history to score in his first two matches for Morocco at a FIFA World Cup. He opened his tally in the tournament in Morocco’s impressive 1-1 draw against Brazil, with a superb shot past goalkeeper Alisson to give the Atlas Lions the lead against one of the pre-tournament favourites. He has now followed that up with a record-breaking goal after just 71 seconds against Scotland, cementing his reputation as one of the competition’s rising stars. With Morocco looking to make another round at the World Cup finals after their historic achievements in Qatar four years ago, Sibari is quickly emerging as one of the faces of the tournament.
