Colombia’s 0-0 draw with Portugal at the 2026 World Cup will be remembered for more than just determining the standings in Group K. While the result secured Colombia top spot and a place in the round of 32, it also put an end to one of the most remarkable statistical streaks in the country’s World Cup history. For the first time since their first appearance at the FIFA World Cup Finals in Chile in 1962, Colombia were held to a goalless draw in football’s biggest tournament. In Los Cafeteros’ last 23 World Cup matches, they have never finished 0-0. That unique run finally ended on June 27, 2026, when Portugal denied them goals in an entertaining but goalless draw in Miami.

Despite the historic result, Colombia remained unbeaten at the top of Group K with seven points, while Portugal moved into second place with five points.

Portugal has finally ended a streak dating back to Colombia’s World Cup debut

Colombia’s World Cup journey spans more than six decades. The South American country made its first FIFA World Cup appearance in Chile in 1962 and, despite spells of absence, has now participated in seven editions of the tournament. Throughout every match they played before facing Portugal, one statistic remained unchanged.Whether Colombia won, lost or tied, there were always goals.

Their previous 23 World Cup matches had produced results ranging from memorable victories to agonizing eliminations, but never a 0-0 draw.

This remarkable sequence finally came to an end against Portugal, making this the first scoreless draw in Colombia’s World Cup history.Ironically, she arrived in a match that was not boring at all.

Colombia dominated the course of play, but was repeatedly denied by Diogo Costa

Although the scoreboard never changed, Colombia was the more dangerous team for long periods at Miami.Coach Nestor Lorenzo’s team controlled the ball 55 percent, took 26 shots compared to 13 for Portugal, forced goalkeeper Diogo Costa to make six impressive saves, and kept up the pressure throughout the evening in order to score the winning goal. The pressure started early when John Arias tested Costa with a powerful shot, and Colombia continued to pass the ball into dangerous areas, registering 23 touches inside Portugal’s penalty area while reducing their opponents to just nine in the early stages.James Rodriguez controlled the tempo of the game, finding space between the lines and providing a brilliant pass in the 62nd minute to set up Richard Reus, whose first shot went wide.

Luis Diaz also caused constant problems down the left flank, straining Portugal’s defense and forcing Joao Cancelo and later Diogo Dalot into difficult situations.Meanwhile, Portugal relied heavily on Costa to keep a clean sheet, while Cristiano Ronaldo had one of his quieter evenings after his record goals against Uzbekistan.

The veteran striker did not find much space in front of Davinson Sanchez and John Lucumi, although he came close to scoring for Portugal with an acrobatic shot from a back kick that was brilliantly blocked by Santiago Arias.

The heartbreak of the VAR did not prevent Colombia from finishing first

Colombia thought they had finally broken Portugal’s resistance in stoppage time. In the second minute of extra time, Davinson Sanchez headed home a free kick, leading to wild celebrations around Miami Stadium as players and fans thought they had secured all three points. These celebrations lasted only a few moments. After a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out for offside, keeping the match score at 0-0 and confirming the historic result.A draw proved enough to secure first place in Group K. Colombia completed the group stage unbeaten on seven points after opening the tournament with a 3-1 win over Uzbekistan before defeating DR Congo 1-0 and then drawing with Portugal. The result also confirmed Portugal’s advancement to second place with five points.

James Rodriguez reaches another historic achievement

The evening also marked another historic moment for Colombian football. By taking the field against Portugal, James Rodriguez made his 11th World Cup appearance, becoming the most capped Colombian player in men’s World Cup history.

He moved away from Freddy Rincon and Carlos Valderrama, who each made 10 World Cup appearances for the national team.James’s latest performance has once again shown why he remains the heart of Colombia’s midfield, controlling the ball, creating chances and helping take his country back to the knockout stages after missing out on qualification for the 2022 World Cup.

Colombia have now progressed beyond the group stage four times in their seven World Cup appearances, having previously reached the round of 16 in 1990 and 2018, achieved their best ever result by reaching the quarter-finals in Brazil in 2014, and have now qualified again in 2026 as Group K winners.Their reward is a round of 32 encounter with Ghana, while Portugal faces Croatia after finishing second in the group. But the record books will remember this night for another reason. Sixty-four years after Colombia’s first World Cup finals appearance in Chile, Portugal finally became the team to complete one of the tournament’s most bizarre national records, ending a run of 23 matches without a single scoreless draw while doing little to dampen what had already become one of Colombia’s best World Cup appearances.
