Cristiano Ronaldo achieved another major achievement at the FIFA World Cup Finals on Saturday, despite Portugal’s 0-0 draw with Colombia in their final match in Group K. The result was enough for both teams to qualify for the round of 32, with Colombia finishing top of the group and Portugal qualifying for second place.The match also marked a historic personal achievement for the 41-year-old Portugal captain. Ronaldo participated in his twenty-fifth match in the World Cup, equaling the record of German legend Lothar Matthaus in the second largest number of participations in the history of the tournament. Only Argentina captain Lionel Messi, who played 29 World Cup matches, has appeared more times on football’s biggest stage.While Ronaldo has added another achievement to his remarkable career, he has also consolidated an extraordinary record.
The veteran striker has been offside 11 times over the last two FIFA World Cups – four more than any other player during that period. Frenchman Kylian Mbappé and Colombian Luis Diaz come in second place, with seven offsides each.On the field, Portugal needed a win to maintain its lead in Group 10, but it struggled to penetrate the organized Colombian defence. Ronaldo remained the main attacking threat for Portugal throughout the match, but it was difficult to get clear chances.
Colombia started brightly and almost took the lead in the first minute when John Cordoba headed the ball over the bar before Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa made a superb save. Portugal enjoyed greater possession of the ball as the match progressed, and Bruno Fernandez came close to scoring in the first half, but Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas blocked it.The South American team almost snatched the exciting winning goal in the 90th minute when Davinson Sanchez scored, but the goal was canceled due to offside. Despite the negative result, Colombia secured top spot in Group K, while Portugal easily qualified for the knockout stage.
