Teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has earned a place in India’s 30-member men’s cricket squad for the 2026 Asian Games, while two of the country’s biggest stars, T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, are notable absentees.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has submitted the longlist to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) ahead of the Asian Games scheduled to be held in Aichi Nagoya, Japan from September 19 to October 4.The omission of Gill and Suryakumar has much to do with India’s busy international calendar. The Asian Games cricket competition will overlap with India’s domestic white-ball series against the West Indies, forcing selectors to prepare separate squads for the two tasks.Scheduling a two-team clash forces strategyThe India vs West Indies series consists of three ODIs and five T20 Internationals, spanning from September 27 to October 17. With Gill expected to lead the Indian ODI team during that series, the selectors chose not to include him in the Asian Games pool. The Asian Games cricket competition is scheduled to be held between September 24 and October 3, creating significant overlap and necessitating a larger pool of players from which two teams can be selected.

As a result, the BCCI has prepared a 30-member roster of players that can be split across the two leagues depending on the team’s final requirements.

There is no room for Suryakumar YadavPerhaps the biggest surprise is the absence of current T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav. The decision suggests that the selectors may already be looking ahead to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the upcoming T20 World Cup cycle. And with a younger core emerging, Suryakumar’s omission suggests he may no longer be central to India’s long-term T20 plans.

Who do you think should lead India in the Asian Games?

Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been rewardedOne of the major talking points is the inclusion of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The teenage batting sensation has enjoyed a remarkable rise over the past year of the IPL and Under-19 World Cup, and is now on the radar of the national selectors.Who can lead India? With Gill and Suriya missing, the race for the captaincy of the Asian Games team looks wide open. It is known that Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma are the leading contenders for the leadership of the team in Japan.Despite the scheduling challenges, several top players have been brought into the fold. Jasprit Bumrah’s name features in the list, although he could eventually be prioritized for the ODI series against West Indies as India continues their preparations for the ODI World Cup 2027.
